Ray Mitchell (2002)

Ray was appointed to Victoria Police in 1945 and retired in 1981 having achieved the rank of Chief Superintendent. Ray died in 2001 at the age of 79 years.

Ray held both the Victorian and Australian Heavyweight Wrestling Championship Titles from 1954 to 1959 and again from 1962 to 1964 when he retired undefeated.

Ray gained selection to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games at the age of 36, after only three years of competition wrestling. He won a number of bouts in the heavyweight division and was placed fourth at these Games. He was also selected to represent Australia at the Rome Olympics.

He further represented Australia as a heavyweight wrestler at the 1958 Cardiff Empire Games where he received third place, and again at the 1962 Perth Empire Games gaining second place.

Ray had a number of other sporting interests that included swimming, weight-lifting and water-polo. He was a Life Member of the Victoria Police Amateur Boxing and Wrestling Club.

 

Ray was inducted into the Victoria Police Sporting Hall of Fame in 2002.
