Ronald James Taylor (2000)

Served Victoria Police from 1954 to 1984

Ron was the Victorian and Australian Heavy Weight champion and winner of the Olympic Heavy Weight trials in 1959, and represented Australia at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. From 1956 to 1960 Ron was the Heavy Weight boxing champion of Victoria Police. He then changed sports, and gained state selection in State and Australian trials, reaching the coxless pairs elimination final in rowing at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Ron has since demonstrated the ability to remain at the elite level in rowing - he was awarded a bronze medal in the 1985 World Veteran Games.

Ron also played VFL football for South Melbourne and St Kilda during the late 1950's and afterwards coached football and little athletics. He became a member of the Torquay and Esplanade Life Saving Clubs and continued to win numerous medals in the Victoria Police Games.

Ron is a Life Member of the Victoria Police Amateur Boxing and Wrestling Club.

 

Ron was inducted into the Victoria Police Sporting Hall of Fame in 2000.
