Les Harley (1995)

Les HARLEY was born in 1911, and he joined the Victoria Police in 1935. He retired as Physical Training Director in 1976, and died in 1987 at the age of 76.

Les HARLEY'S boxing achievements include:

Australian Amateur Lightweight Champion in 1928 and 1929.

Australian Amateur Middleweight Champion in 1932.

Australian Amateur Heavyweight Champion in 1933, 1935 and 1937.

He represented Australia in the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin, where he reached the quarter finals. He was bronze medallist in the 1938 Empire Games.

Les retired from boxing in 1939 after winning 93 out of 100 bouts of boxing. He was also the Victoria Police Boxing Champion from 1937 to 1940.

He also won various State Titles in wrestling, swimming and diving. He represented Victoria in water polo and soccer.

Les also played Australian Rules football with Carlton and North Melbourne.

 

Les was inducted into the Victoria Police Sporting Hall of Fame in 1995.
