How to join the Victoria Police Hockey Club
Do you want to join the Victoria Police Hockey Club?
The Victoria Police Hockey Club is comprised of current serving and retired police members of varying standards. We play matches regularly against teams from secondary schools, the Royal Australian Navy and other emergency services in official games including; the Victoria Police & Emergency Services Games, Australasian Police Games and the World Police & Fire Games.
The games against secondary schools are aimed at fostering relationships with impressionable youths, steering them away from anti social and criminal behaviour and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. They are social in nature with mingling afterwards and presentations by Police Command or other dignitaries. We have also conducted hockey clinics and social matches at the Melbourne International Transit Accommodation centre in Broadmeadows, again fostering positive relationships with the detainees.
Our most recent achievement was at the World Police and Fire Games in Belfast, Ireland where 14 members of the VPHC competed in men’s, women’s and mixed competition as part of the Australian Emergency Services team. After much blood, sweat and beers we won the gold medals in the women’s and mixed competition and won bronze in the men’s competition. This is the second time we have won gold at a world event. Afterwards we toured Ireland with members of the Irish Garda (Police) and played social matches against their county teams. We have also successfully competed at the Australasian Emergency Services Games in New Zealand and competed in Tasmania, CoffsHarbour, Adelaide, and the list goes on. We are now planning for the next Australasian Games to be held in New Zealand in 2022.
We communicate via e-mail on most occasions with newsletters and advertisements of upcoming matches in enough time for rostering. Most of our games against schools and other emergency services are played on a Wednesday. We are currently planning for some country Victoria games later this year. Our team fundraise to subsidise travel and expenses.
