Victoria Police Football Club

THE BIG V

‘I think athletic men make better and more energetic Constables than men of a slothful, sluggish disposition' Contained within the original submission to form our club in 1906, provided by the Inspecting Superintendent of the time, and directed to the then Chief Commissioner Mr O'CALLAGHAN.

The Victoria Police Football Club was formed in 1906 and is the second oldest police sporting club. The VPFC is a non-profit club and members (police officers) donate their time and annual leave to attend functions, community events, camps and is apart of the Australian Police Football Association participating in the annual National Police Football Championship. Players are recruited from around the state and work in different areas of Victoria Police. The players play regular football during the year then come together when the Big V calls. The VPFC has fielded many ex/present VFL/AFL players including Aaron Henneman (Essendon), Leon Higgins, Darren Holmes (Sydney Swans) and Peter Street (Western Bulldogs).

The VPFC is very community orientated performing a number of community initiatives including the VPFC ‘Kicking Goals' Success and Empowerment Program. This program was developed in 2008 and continues to develop into a great leadership program. The VPFC was awarded the Team of the Year 08/09 (for the second time) at the annual Victoria Police Amateur Sports and Welfare Society Awards for our efforts in this field. We have also participated in a number of community projects and charity matches throughout the years supporting various charities including The Royal Children's Hospital, Tigers in the community (Disadvantage youth in the Collingwood and Richmond areas), Very Special Kids (Caring for terminally ill children), St Mary's House of Welcome, Blue Ribbon Foundation, the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and Reclink.

The VPFC competes in the National Police Football Championship (NPFC) which is held each October in a capital city on a rotational basis. At present the participating teams are Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and New South Wales. The VPFC proudly competes for a number of highly respected trophies including the "Tynan - Eyre Memorial Trophy" and the "Silk - Miller Memorial Trophy". The club has been very successful over a number of years and continues to be dominant in the NPFC. Over the years the VPFC has had a number of All Australian representatives and players and coaches selected in the Australian Combined Emergency Services sides. We have an immediate network of 200 police officers around Australia which extends to their respective workplaces and other Emergency Services including the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

Club Song

Out we come, out we come, out we come to play,

Just for recreation sake to pass the time away.

Lots of fun, heaps of fun, enjoy yourself today,

Victoria's boys are hard to beat, when they come out to play.

So join in the chorus and sing it one and all,

Join in the chorus, Victoria's on the ball.

Good old Victoria, they're champions you'll agree,

Victoria is the team that plays to win for you and me.
